looking for a nutritionist...what questions should i ask?

Posted in Group:

I started doing gymnastics a couple weeks ago and have been considering getting a nutritionist. I'm looking for someone who specializes in both sports nutrition and eating disorders. I found three different people in my area. My therapist wants me to come up with a list of questions to ask them before I call. But I don't really know what to ask. Any ideas?

where are you living, perhaps southern california?! i have an amazing, world-renowned nutritionist who specializes in eating disorders, and is also a professional athlete... she's in Irvine, CA and is the co-creator of intuitive eating.

if you're not in socal, i'd recommend checking out the book (or book on cd) before seeing a nutritionist because it could help you get a sense of what types of appropriate questions to ask...

i see evelyn tribole and it's probably the best addition to my recovery team! since seeing her, i've really improved in multiple ways...

insurance coverage is prolly the best way to go about finding a nutritionist - see if there are any in your health care provider's network with these specializations. warning: i first saw an in-network nutritionist which was covered through my old plan, but though she said she specialized in eating disorders, i really don't think she knew enough helpful advice or resources... there's a big difference between those who "specialize," and those who have worked with ppl having similar problems. evelyn's FOCUS is on those suffering with eating disorders, and man can i see the difference!

hmmm now i'm trying to think of more helpful advice, or questions...

what do you charge for the initial consultation, and what do you charge for follow up sessions?

do you accept health insurance?

what is your experience with the treatment of those with eating disorders?

may i have a general idea of how you work with your clients?

how do you implement exercise into recovery plans? (or something along those lines

... if i think of any more i'll add!

Misst,

That's so cool! ♥ I have ordered the book, and it's supposed to be delivered tomorrow! :) The owner of my clinic recommended it to me. :)

Fearundercontrol,

Make sure that whomever you choose has experience in eating disorders. We have to follow different "rules" than most people, and we need someone that will be gentle with food. ♥ You might ask a therapist for a suggestion...

Good luck!

Jen

My insurance does not cover nutritionists unless it is due to diabetes, which I do not have, so I need to find someone who is willing to work on a seriously sliding scale. I live in Central NY. (And no, I've never been to the City...shocker, I know.) I have found a few names after an online search, and it was listed that they specialize in eating disorders and sports nutrition, but obviously just because it's listed as a specialty (or they claim it's a specialty) doesn't necessarily mean squat. My therapist really wants me to contact these people this week, and I really just want to play the procrastination game. Telling myself I'll be fine on my own...and I hate making phone calls...and contacting people I don't know...

Ah, I'm good at playing the procrastination game, too, particularly those involving phone calls. ;0) It's important, though! Time to put yourself first. ♥

Love,

Jen
