Stressful unsupportive home environment

Posted in Group:

I am SO upset with my mother!! I know that she is worried sick about me, and she just wants me to recover from anorexia, but she is not helping me at all!!! It's so frustrating because she badgers me constantly and says, "you are not serious about changing, stop wasting your doctor's and therapist's time, you don't want to change, you just want to stay at that low weight bordering on a hospital admission forever." It is so nasty. She places such a huge emphasis on the weight results from every Tuesday after therapy, and she says that since I have been going for nearly 3 months and I have still not gained any weight then I haven't improved. But it makes me SO UPSET because I have tried so so hard, I have been eating my 3 meals and 3 snacks a day regularly (up until yesterday when I felt so depressed) and have been able to eat foods that I NEVER would have eaten before. My therapist tells me I am making a lot of progress but when I go home after my session and Mum shoots me down like that, I feel so depressed.

She isn't even speaking to me at the moment, maybe I should just give up on recovery. Anorexia is what I do best. I am good at not eating or limiting my food intake. I just want to starve and maybe I should starve until I reach a low enough weight to be admitted as an inpatient, because it is better than being stuck here with my horrible mother in this stressful house. All I want is for her to support me, and she just keeps yelling and shaking me and screaming, "what is wrong?" I feel awful, maybe she is right. I should just give up, it would be so much easier. I would love to move out but financially can't afford it. It's just so damn frustrating, I feel guilty enough for putting my whole family through this and she just makes me feel a million times worse.

Ash
Mothers tend to do things that they thing are right, ya know they are the mothers. My mother is the same way. I quit smoking and she went into my house and took all my smokes out. i had 5 cartons, she thought she was doing the right thing. Have you taken your mother with you to councelling? have you given her reading materials on your illness? I suffer from PTSD, Anxiety and all those great things that come from it. Once I gave my mother reading materials on this she had a diferent tune on things. They way i explained it to my mother was a reflection on her imperfections. She initially was angry, however with it in her head, she realized. your mother needs a support group also. Get her nto therephy so she has someone to talk to about the disease.
As for you ya can be fixed overnight. You have to regain your stomach and see you self as the new person you want to be. You goto want to change for you and nobody else.

Please don't give up. I have a mother who is similar, only she is trying to be the therapist, always saying I'm the one to blame for the way I am. I found it to be easier when I'm away from her than when I'm around her. This is why I come here, where people give advice and help and understand what we're going through. I wish you the best of luck.
